A pristine copy of Super Mario 64 just sold for a record-breaking $1.56 million (£1.12 million) on Heritage Auctions, making it the most valuable video game collectible of all time.
Released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64, it received a virtually perfect score of 9.8 A++ still, does this justify the $1.56 million price tag attached to it? Well, it isn’t hard to see why it would go for such a high figure, after all, it was the best-selling title for the Nintendo 64 and has had a huge cultural influence on the videogames we play today.
It’s not new to hear of games being sold at such high prices, the previous record belonged to an unopened copy of the original Legend of Zelda for the NES, which went for $878k (£633k) which was only set last week. Other games such as Super Mario Bros. have sold for $660k (~£476k) back in April 2021.
You can watch the auction here, where it starts at a mere $260k and rises to its final value of $1.3 million (Ofcourse Heritage had to take their juicy cut in form of fees).
Haven’t got a million to spare? Don’t worry, you can still grab a second-hand copy from a local second-hand goods store such as CEX for around £40 ($55).
